I caved in...
and really learned to crochet. I have tried several times before, but I just could not get past my own perfectionism. I had finally decided that I would treat myself to knitting and crocheting as a special *new* skill when I approach the end of my days--you know, when I start going to bed at 6 p.m. and waking up at 4 a.m.--when I will spend a lot of my day in my rocker/glider, or as an alternative to gardening. Something to look forward to.
But I keep coming across the prettiest blankets and things on the internet! And, thinking frugally [or trying to], it only makes sense! So, a couple of weeks ago, I asked my sweet MIL to show me how to crochet. She has been crocheting since she was twelve--she's an expert! Here is my first attempt:
Ugh, the blurry or too-bright photos! (Disclaimer--I used Lamb's camera--I should read the camera manual! Note the wrong date/time/etc.). I don't know if you can tell, but this is some tight weave! I decided to make it into a washcloth. I think it's very granny chic! When I saw my MIL this past weekend, she showed me how to make the scalloped edge, so I added one to my washcloth, hoping it would help camoflauge the uneven sides, LOL.
I also made this yellow baby blanket:
Can you see my mistakes? I am hoping that they are not too noticeable...I finished it last night and will wash it before I package it up and mail it away for a sweet baby. Nobody y'all would know...

I can't see any mistakes but then I don't know much about knitting and crocheting either. Alot of help I am. lol My MIL tried to teach me a long time ago but I just never got the hang of it. I think your blankets turned out great!
Congrats on a new skill. I wouldn't know what to look for when it comes to mistakes. I think it looks great! My Mom has crocheted a few things. But I could never get past just doing the first string line. (Apparently I am good at forgetting to count). I need to ask her to help me again. I might give her a call. I have a freind who crochets blankets and mixes it with ribbon. When every she does them for a new little baby, I am always in awe, and I consider trying again.
how fun!!! they look great--and I see no mistakes!
Ms. KitKat you are way tooooooooooo hard on yourself :hammer: This is amazing! You should be doing this :celebrate: Funny thing is Rocker Boy loves to crochet - never thought my14 year rebelous rocker child would say " hey mom don't forget my new crochet needle at Walmart!" or discuss the ever improving qualities of yarn with an older lady in the doctors waiting room ... go figure - Do it because you love it not because your perfect at at.... I sew cause I love it but don't look to close cause it looks like a drunk person did it!
Hubby and I were talking about when our sibling group was the same age as your boys this morning- and we do not know how we made it through - so the fact that you take the time to do something you enjoy is awesome -
I'm jealous :hmmmmm: they look great!
Looks great! I can't see any mistakes, but I'm only just learning myself. I just taught myself to knit this past winter, and started (re)learning crochet as well. You're inspiring me to keep working at the crochet!
Blessings,
Kym
I can crochet, but only one particular stitch. I love the blanket and the washcloth! Great Job!
You did a great job!!! I know how to crochet but have a hard time finding the time I need to do it though.:big-smile:
Thanks for all the sweet comments! I am now working on my second baby blanket~I am trying to crochet at least two "lines" per night (more if I can get away with it, LOL!).
:dancingcow:
The secret to good crocheting is learning to cover mistakes. :dancingcow:
:celebrate:WOW!
Good for you for learning a new skill:). I've been knitting for almost 1 year and I just love it. I wanted to learn since I was a teenager.
Your things look great.
