Ideas needed
I am trying to figure out what to buy for our soon-to-be 5 year old for his birthday. I feel so out of it, toy-wise. What's hip right now?

I wish I could help but I have no idea either! My nephew just turned 5 and I bought him a bug bingo game! He loves it but he is one of those children that just likes to do board games and puzzles all day. -- Looking forward to seeing what you get him.
Hey well I can tell you that my boys ages 2 and 8 are right into John Deere and farm animals. An they also love to play with Transformers and Robots. Good luck let us all know what you get, hope he loves it and I wish him a blessed Birthday.
I am definitely no help, even if I had a younger child. We always bought Jessie educational toys. We never went with the fads, although now? We are making up for lost time, I guess. We bought her an iTouch for last Christmas, a Game boy a couple of years ago and a Playstation years ago. And, of course, a cell phone. The only thing she really likes is the iTouch, she never obsessed over stuff like I've heard other kids do (playing with them for hours at a time). I could never use them to ground her from, but I do occasionally ground her from her phone (twice).
Anyway, enough of that! :hammer: I hope you find what you are looking for!

We combined the 3- and 5-year old's birthdays (they are less than a month apart), and I ended up with two mammoth gifts for them to share: a huge (huge!) canister of Tinker Toys, and a *ginormous* gym ball for outside--they love them! 
I can tell you that my boys ages 2 and 8 are currently into lazer tag, John Deere Tractors, Cowboy stuff, hunting and legos ! They got some pretty neat lego kits that you can build many different things and add to it as well. Keep in mind it does not have to be a new item check on craigslist search under toys and games. I have found some great deals for my kids for Christmas on there and birthdays. Good Luck ! Let me know what you get. :wink-wink:
